Position Description
To plan and execute comprehensive marketing communication programs for medical device industry products and technologies
Position Responsibilities
Strategic Planning: Help provide strategic direction as related to communication materials/messages based on marketing strategies to leverage communication efforts for the SH business - Define integrated communication strategies to leverage and brand products and technologies across the business unit and occasionally across the CardioVascular business - Develop a communications plan to meet marketing objectives and then develop the tactics to support that plan; help project coordinator or contractor writers to do this as needed - Determine the best communication channels and tools to communicate the marketing messages in the most cost effective, expeditious manner
Writing/Editing: - Determine the appropriate communication tool to meet a marketing objective and then develop that toolwriting, editing, handling review process, coordinating as necessary to complete the project on time and within budget - Research, write and edit (or plan/coordinate) all types of marketing communication materials for programs/launches: brochures, journal ads, monographs, video/DVDs, direct mail, multimedia programs, internet/extranet sites, convention support, PR support - Acquire subject knowledge by interviewing marketing, R&D, clinical and regulatory personnel and by referring to the product as well as marketing documentation
Creative Management: Manage the development of marketing communication materials for specific businesses and occasionally cross SH/CardioVascular to the satisfaction of business partners - Research, write and edit all types of marketing communication materials for programs/launches: brochures, journal ads, direct mail, multimedia programs, internet/extranet sites, monographs, video/DVDs, convention support, PR support - Ensure materials developed adhere to Medtronic Masterbrand and corporate identity - Acquire subject knowledge by interviewing marketing, clinical, and regulatory personnel and by referring to the product as well as the marketing documentation - Oversee the creative development of marketing materials by providing insight to the business unit needs and objectives and collaborating with the creative staff
Project Management: Execute communications programs on time and within budget, satisfying the needs of marketing partners and ensuring product launch dates are not negatively impacted due to Communications. - Establish and manage timelines, budgets and resources for marketing communication projects (creative team to vendors). - Set priorities for contractor writers, vendors and project coordinator
Financial Management: Establish and monitor budget for marketing communications support
People Management: Ensure an environment where direct reports and contractors feel comfortable and are able to work productively to contribute. - Manage activities of the marketing communications team for a launch/program - Provide work direction to and set priorities for project coordinator and contractor writers - Hire contractors and manage additional contract resources as needed - Plan, schedule and arrange own activities in accomplishing objectives
Quality Management: - Qualify the expectations of business unit partners and ensure customer satisfaction of marketing plans and materials - Address regulatory and legal requirements as they relate to marketing communication materials/programs and the marketing communications development processes in order to prevent lawsuits and audit findings - Maintain necessary records for project tracking and legal/regulatory requirements - Ensure materials developed adhere to Medtronic Masterbrand and corporate identity - Establish and implement standard operating procedures and process improvement initiatives to enhance marketing communication team performance, and especially to address any regulatory or legal issues
Team Management: Be either a leader or a productive member of a team as the situation demands - Participate as member of and act as an advocate of the communications team to increase awareness of the Marketing Communications team and its capabilities - Conduct meetings for internal and external representation - Partner with marketing, geographies, businesses, clinical, legal, regulatory affairs, sales force, contract writers, agencies to build and maintain positive relationships - Establish a network of relationships across Medtronic, including Corporate Communications, Conventions and PR, business unit marketing communications teams to seek other communication perspectives - Travel required (Twin City facilities, field visit, represent communications at meetings/conventions/launches)
Basic Qualifications
- B.A./B.S. in English or Communications - Minimum of 5 years of experience in communications - Experience developing and executing a marketing communications plan and campaign to launch a product or program - Experience with print, multimedia, web - Experience in working on multi-disciplinary teams - Experience working in a regulated industry
Desired/Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in medical writing and/or knowledge of medical terminology -Experience writing marketing documentation - Experience developing and presenting creative ideas and concepts - Experience working in a regulated environment - Knowledge of Medtronic and its products - Experience with production process for print, multimedia, web - Experience managing writers, graphics personnel, vendors - Comfortable leading meetings; addressing tough issues - Ability to handle multiple projects on an ongoing basis, handle changing priorities - Ability to work independently and motivated to perform at a high-level without constant supervision - Ability to work effectively with others across departments/disciplines to implement solutions - Excellent communication skills: written and oral - Ability to develop and present creative ideas and concepts - Strong project management skills, including organization and budgeting - Strong attention to detail - Professional manner, positive attitude
