To learn more about Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, visit The Opportunity There is a requirement for a Senior Enterprise Architect to take a leadership role in the design, development and implementation of a new service oriented architecture Learning Management System, to deliver rich internet applications with a strong emphasis on the user experience. The final solution will incorporate a loosely coupled abstracted tiered architecture, the re-use of existing application functionality, provided as easily accessible and integrated services, new services development, web services and a feature rich presentation layer. The candidate will be expected to lead and work as part of a dedicated Engineering team including Systems and Data Architects, Security and Integration specialists and Senior Engineers, and interact with a highly efficient QA team. They will perform systems analysis and design, system modelling, performance modelling, integration planning and technology and component selection to ensure architectural consistency and coherence between technical and business processes. Duties & Responsibilities:
* Lead the design and development of a SOA Learning Management System * Actively contribute to the software architecture, development strategy and principles to ensure it is aligned strategically with company and program objectives * Responsible for defining standards across all software development in conjunction with domain experts * Participate in the identification of architectural components at an enterprise level, both legacy and newly developed, including resolution of legacy integration issues through reengineering * Evaluates new technologies and applications to determine the feasibility and desirability of incorporating their features within our solutions Requirements Essential
* Experienced technology architect with broad understanding of all the components of large service oriented architecture * Experience in architecting complex systems from the ground up that have to scale to handle large volumes of users and data * Ability to provide a visionary approach to incorporate future technology developments and products into the LMS * Ability to influence technical discussions and provide technical leadership across a large team with major deliverables * Ability to anticipate problems and take decisive action, giving regard to the impact on both development teams and stakeholders * Ideal candidate will have 10-15 years hands on industry experience, with at least 10 years architecture experience * Extensive knowledge of architecture principles, patterns and methodologies and demonstrate expertise in a variety of application development technology concepts * Strong J2EE and .NET background with an ability to make decisions independent of technology * Exposure to the educational software environment and familiarity with industry * Experience in managing and working with third party development teams * Possess excellent communication skills, the drive to succeed and work independently and on a team, with the ability to multi task, and deliver quality results
