Pipeline Welding Specialist (Birmingham, AL)Title: Pipeline Welding Specialist (Birmingham, AL) Location: Alabama-Birmingham El Paso Corporation owns and operates North America's largest natural gas pipeline system. We are currently looking to add an experienced, qualified and skilled Pipeline Welding Specialist to our Central Maintenance Division located in Birmingham, AL.
Qualified candidates must possess knowledge, skills and job related experience in order to perform tasks and assignments associated with pipeline design, construction, operations and maintenance of natural gas pipelines. This position requires the individual to follow all safety policies so that the tasks and assignments are completed in a safe and environmentally responsible manner, with an emphasis on finishing each day incident and injury free. Daily responsibilities include performing pipe fabrication welds, welding fittings on loaded lines, tie-in welds under a “hot work permit”, and hot taps on steel pipelines that range in various sizes up to 42” in diameter.
Incumbent is required to complete pipeline operations and maintenance tasks and projects in support of plant, pipeline, corrosion, measurement, controls, and engineering projects. Incumbent will be required to pass El Paso Corporation’s welding qualification tests according to API 1104 utilizing Group I, II and III electrodes.
The Welding Specialist will report to a Crew Leader to ensure consistency in maintenance practices. Other responsibilities include performing administrative tasks such as: ordering and receiving parts and material, personal timesheets and expense accounts, DOT Logbooks, and maintaining a Company vehicle. The position requires acting as a Company representative when interacting with contractors and vendors. Incumbent may also be required to work as a welder’s helper and as a Pipeline Maintenance Specialist and the ability to operate heavy equipment is a plus. A typical work schedule is Monday through Thursday, ten hours per day.
This position requires a significant amount of overnight travel to support operation areas throughout the company, working other than normal hours, overtime, schedule changes, the ability to respond to call-outs, and work in adverse weather and extreme temperature conditions.
Qualifications * Must possess knowledge, skills and job related experience or have completed an associate welding degree acquired through a technical school * Live or relocate permanent residence to within 60 miles of El Paso Corporation’s Birmingham, AL compressor station * High school diploma or equivalent * Ability to read and interpret various company policies and procedures, Operations & Maintenance (O&M) Manual and blueprints * Valid Driver's license and good driving record is required * Ability to respond in a timely manner to any emergency or after-hours calls * Basic PC computer skills and trainable to custom software applications * Good communication skills -- must be able to interface effectively with many internal and external customers, land owners, regulatory officials, company contacts and co-workers * Manual dexterity with physical ability to work in situations which require bending, kneeling, squatting, reaching and lifting/carrying up to fifty (50) pounds. May be exposed to working in harsh weather
