We currently have an exciting opportunity for a Communications Manager for a new, major Photon Science Initiative. As part of the Initiative, the Communications Manager will serve as the primary lead to organize a distributed effort into a team with a concentration of force and singleness of purpose. The Communications Manager will be busy, and will be managing a wide variety of projects that will have tight deadlines.
This is a key Laboratory program which requires the incumbent to effectively organize and coordinate a variety of critical elements of the initiative including education, technical collaboration, communications, and meetings, events/conferences, and outreach. Responsible for effectively collaborating and consulting with the appropriate subject matter experts in the Photon Sciences Area, Accelerator and Fusion Research, Engineering, and other scientific Divisions, the Public Affairs Department on education, government and community relations, and communications strategies for internal and external audiences and stakeholders.
The Photon Science Initiative Communications Manager serves as the primary communications and outreach coordinator of the initiative.
Responsibilities:
Responsible for tracking and spurring action on the coordinated development and implementation of the communications plan for the Initiative.
Build internal and external support and momentum around the Initiative through leading collaborations with key stakeholders and the development of education and communications strategies to reach various audiences.
Ensure the communications strategy maps on to the technical efforts related to the Initiative. Proactively engage with researchers and project managers to facilitate technical collaboration as well as problem analysis and resolution.
Effectively partner with relevant subject matter experts from Public Affairs and the scientific community to drive internal education efforts, organize conferences, seminars, workshops, briefings, and other science and internal events aimed at promoting the Initiative.
Liaise with the Public Affairs Department to develop communications materials for both internal and external audiences and stakeholders. Ensure that information is accessible and adaptable to a variety of lay and technical audiences.
Performs other duties related to the initiative as assigned by the office of the Lab Director, Associate Lab Director for Photon Sciences, and Engineering Division Director.
Qualifications:
B.A./B.S. or advanced degree (e.g. Master's or Ph.D.) in the physical sciences or communications with a focus on science and technology, with a minimum of 5-10 years of work experience including initiative planning, scheduling, and coordination; or an equivalent combination of education, academic achievements and experience.
Proven ability to effectively collaborate with subject experts toward leading education, outreach, and communications activities aimed at promoting and advancing technical programs/initiatives.
Experience analyzing technical information and facilitating dialogue between various technical and non-technical parties to resolve issues and reach common understanding.
Demonstrated experience utilizing computerized databases, information systems, and spreadsheet and report generation.
General knowledge in aspects of program planning, coordination and scheduling.
Ability to develop clear and concise presentations, briefings and reports containing programmatic and technical data to various levels and diverse audiences. Proven ability to deliver recommendations and action plans to address problematic issues as well as good practices.
Understanding of the state, local and federal process from a policy and communications standpoint.
Eager to juggle multiple projects at the same time, and excited to be part of a team, and an effort, that will help create cutting-edge science while also helping the Lab maintain its position as an international leader in the scientific arena.
Experience developing proposals, organizational and project plans, and presentations.
Knowledge of professional concepts involved in effective program management, planning, research methodology, and principles/practices applicable to ensuring effective program implementation and maintenance.
Note: For external candidates, this is a two-year term position, with a possibility of extension, contingent upon satisfactory performance, continued availability of work, and funding. This position requires completion of a background check.
