Job Role: Network Engineer (Consultant/Specialist)
Location: Bay Area (Walnut Creek, CA)
High-Level Job Description:
We are seeking a senior level Network Engineer to assist in the Plan, Design, and Implementation activities relating to upgrading our client’s network environment. The role of the Network Engineer is to ensure the Reliability, Availability, and Serviceability (RAS) of the Data, Voice, and Video network services. This is achieved by planning, designing, and implementing wide area networks (WANs) and local area networks (LANs) across the organization. This individual will also analyze and resolve network hardware and software problems in a timely and accurate fashion. The Network Engineer will work closely with the program office, business partners, vendors, and other technical staff to develop and analyze business and technical requirements, establish options, recommendations and associated cost benefits, and implement cost effective solutions.
The Network Engineer will document engineering standards and proposals/recommendations for network designs and engineering changes; assist in the development of project teams; work with other network engineers, technical staff and vendors to develop/implement network projects; research, evaluate and recommend new tools/technologies; and assess emerging network technologies and make recommendations to the Infrastructure Program team.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
· Develop and present WAN/LAN network engineering design packages.
· Develop low-level WAN/LAN design documentation.
· Plan, Design, and Implement Local Area Networks, including development of configurations.
· Plan, Design, and Implement Wide Area Networks, including development of configurations.
· Implement routing protocols, including OSPF and BGP.
· Troubleshooting and problem solving for network and application issues.
· Configure and assist with implementation of network hardware, including routers, switches, wireless access points, VoIP equipment, security appliances, etc.
· Create and maintain network documentation as it relates to network topology, equipment, and configuration.
· Interact and negotiate with application owners, project managers, vendors, consultants, and contractors to design and implement network solutions.
· Make use of standard operating procedures and applications for service, change, and incident management.
· Provide technical network engineering leadership to other internal network engineers, contractors, and consultants.
· Provide input for enhancements and updates to current network standards and guidelines.
· Contribute to the ongoing development of Change Management templates and repeatable processes.
· Develop network engineering templates for designs and configuration scripts.
· Develop processes and procedures to ensure quality and consistency in Network Design and Implementation.
· Participate in the network design review process and provide input and recommendations to other network engineers in order to improve compliance against current standards and guidelines.
Required Skills:
· Experience with WAN technologies such as Routers, Leased Lines, SONET (OC-3, OC-12, OC-48, etc.), Metro-Ethernet, and MPLS.
· Experience with LAN technologies such as Routers, Switches, HA Architecture, Core/Distribution/Access Layer, and other LAN products, features, and protocols.
· In-depth knowledge of OSPF, BGP, QoS, and Cisco IOS.
· Extensive hands-on experience with Cisco routing and switching products such as 28xx, 35xx, 37xx, 38xx, 45xx, 65xx, 7200 and 7500 series equipment.
· Knowledge of IP traffic flow, protocol analysis, capturing, and monitoring of live traffic streams.
· Ability to document aspects of networks and services provided to users.
· Extensive knowledge of Microsoft Visio, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
· Strong technical project management and engineering skills are mandatory.
· Able to effectively prioritize multiple tasks in a high-pressure environment.
· Proven analytical and problem-solving abilities.
· Ability to identify process improvement opportunities and propose effective solutions.
· Strong interpersonal, written, and oral communication and presentation skills.
· Ability to write detailed, complex documents for technical and non-technical audiences.
· Highly self motivated and directed, with keen attention to detail.
· Ability to interface with executives and high-level managers and to provide recommendations and advice on technical issues and strategy.
· Ability to learn independently, research products and technologies, and to problem solve as well as to assume a technical leadership role as needed.
Additional Skills:
Although the following skills are not a direct requirement for this particular position they would be considered a definite advantage to prospective candidates:
· Plan, Design, and Implement Wireless LANs (WLAN), including Autonomous and Lightweight Access Points (LWAPP) and WLAN Controllers.
· Plan, Design, and Implement Cisco Voice over IP (VoIP) networks, including development of configurations, and migration from PBX/TDM environments.
Preferred Qualifications:
· University degree in a related field and/or equivalent work experience.
· Demonstrate technical excellence, including industry related certifications. Cisco CCIE certification not required but a definite advantage.
· 10+ years of WAN/LAN engineering experience in a large enterprise environment.
· 10+ years experience with Cisco Systems network equipment.
· 10+ years experience designing, evaluating, and recommending networking solutions.
· 10+ years in the networking/telecommunications industry.
· 10+ years working with telecommunications vendors.
· Network design and engineering experience within a healthcare environment.
· Experience with large project rollouts and construction projects.
