The Daily Press in Hampton Roads is seeking a creative and experienced editor to lead the newsroom in its daily content-gathering operations. He or she will direct and plan how that content will be used across platforms starting with its social media publication moving to its digital (web, mobile and tablet) publication and ending with its print publication. He or she will oversee editors in news and features and the publications they produce including: the , , , The Daily Press and five hyperlocal weekly publications. The position reports directly to the VP of Content for the Daily Press Media Group.

This editor should know:

  • AP Style without having to look it up, what it means for a writer to have a sense of voice and can cite examples of watchdog journalism.
  • Knows that text alone is made stronger and more interesting with good art, video and design and collaborates and encourages the members of those teams to make certain they actively participate to produce the best stories across platforms
  • How to use social media, email alerts and text messages for breaking news of every kind knowing that it has to be done accurately as well as quickly.
  • How to direct and plan the big Sunday centerpiece project and word edit all of its elements in print but also be able to identify opportunities for online databases, interactive maps, photo galleries, timelines, video or suggest a QR code when appropriate.
  • How to manage newsroom personalities, products and processes to work effectively and efficiently to produce the best journalistic results.
  • Takes the initiative to come up with new and different ways to tell a story and encourages news staff to do the same, knowing that even if something fails, there's something to be learned.
